Love, hidden libraries, lost stories, and a starless sea. A whimsical tale for all those who love books.

If you are looking for magic, you might find it here. Zachary Ezra Rawlins, a graduate in Vermont and son of a fortune teller, discovers a book at the university library. As he flicks through the pages, he comes across something rather bizarre – a story from his own childhood. Confused, he sets off to try and make sense of this surreal book and ends up on a twisting adventure in a library hidden beneath our footsteps. This is a realm of lost cities and lovers, of pirates and giant rabbits. He soon learns that there are those who protect this world – and those that want to see its demise.

I became infatuated with Morgenstern’s writing when I read The Night Circus, so when I discovered she had written a new book I was ecstatic! Her lyrical prose is not to everyone’s taste, but for me her way of writing is a form of magic itself. Which is a key element in The Starless Sea – the writing is beautifully crafted and immersive, with enthralling storylines interweaving together.

The Starless Sea is a love letter to the magic of stories, exploring themes of love and fate. Hauntingly beautiful, poetic, and full of wonder – it is one of those books that is a delight to read. I was well and truly spellbound. As mentioned earlier, I truly believe Morgenstern weaves magic into her writing– I was entranced, unable to put the book down. For days afterwards, I daydreamed about bees and of a library existing in time.

The Starless Sea is pure escapism, a book for all those obsessed with the beauty of story.
